Why choose dental crowns?

Dental crowns are artificial “caps” that cover the visible portion of your natural tooth. Crowns serve a variety of purposes, including providing strength, restoring, or improving the appearance of damaged teeth, a crown can preserve a weakened tooth from fracturing or replace a large dental filling when insufficient tooth is remaining. Crowns may also be used to hold a dental bridge in place, or to cover a dental implant or misshaped or severely discoloured.

When are dental crowns used?

  • Broken teeth
  • Misalignment
  • Discolored teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Fractured teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Severe decay

Dental crowns also form the visible portion of dental implants and bridgework.

What is the process for getting dental crowns?

The first step is a comprehensive dental exam and imaging to determine the extent of the damage. If Dr. Yampolsky determines a dental crown is the best treatment, she numbs the treatment area to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

Next, she addresses any areas of decay. If there’s an insufficient amount of tooth tissue to support a crown, she uses a special dental material to “build up” your natural tooth.

For the new crown to fit properly, Dr. Yampolsky must shape your tooth. Once that process is complete, she takes impressions to provide the dental lab with the data needed to craft your custom crown.

You receive a temporary crown to wear until the permanent version arrives; then, you return to the office, and Dr. Yampolsky assesses the fit and color of your crown. She alters the crown prior to cementing it into place if her keen eye notices that minor adjustments are required.

Does my new dental crown need special care?

Once your crown is complete, it looks and functions just like your natural teeth. You simply need to maintain healthy oral hygiene habits like brushing and flossing. While your crown can’t decay, the surrounding gum and bone tissue can sustain damage if your oral health declines, therefore, we recommend routine, comprehensive dental hygiene appointments to prevent oral health problems.

You must avoid habits that could damage your crown: don’t use your teeth as tools and avoid biting down on ice or hard foods. If you grind your teeth at night, ask Dr. Yampolsky about a custom-fitted night guard to protect your teeth from excessive wear.

With proper care, you can expect your dental crowns to last for many years to come. To get started on a path toward a restored smile, book your appointment with Dr. Yampolsky today.

What is a Zirconium Crown?

Zirconium crowns are absolutely metal-free and the most advanced solution available on the market. They are made with the use of CAD/CAM technology, which ensures great precision and allows the crown to perfectly fit the tooth and gum. Zirconium (zirconium oxide) is an extremely durable material. Contrary to metal, it is characterised by high biocompatibility, thus does not cause allergic reactions and does not leave any black line at the gum level. Metal-free zirconium crowns look very natural, just like the rest of your teeth.

What is a porcelain crown?

Our natural tooth is translucent in color which makes it very hard to match.  When using traditional metal fused to porcelain crowns (PFM), the metal substructure blocks the reflection of the light. The restoration loses its translucency and looks unnatural and opaque in color.  Porcelain crowns are the only dental restorations  with such translucency.  The greatest advantage of porcelain crowns is their aesthetics. Owing to their gradient translucency, they are indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Porcelain fused to metal crown (PFM) vs. all ceramic crown (metal-free)

With porcelain fused to metal  crown (PFM), it is never possible to achieve such an aesthetic effect as in the case of all-ceramic or zirconium crowns. The metal is the main cause of that as it does not transmit light and forms discolouration at the gum level. Additionally, metal can sometimes cause allergic reactions.

All-ceramic crowns not only provide beautiful and natural results, but are also durable and have no negative effects on the gums. Porcelain is attractive, strong, stable, and highly resistant to wear or stains. It offers a high level of biocompatibility because it does not contain metal.
